I had dental implants done on two of my teeth. I had to pay the full cost of the implants because my insurance didn’t find it a “necessary procedure”. What the heck? I need teeth, right? Somehow the implants didn’t take and now I have to have the whole thing done over again and he’s charging me the same full price. Again, up front. Shouldn’t the second time around be more affordable?
Dental insurance usually only covers the minimum necessary procedure, so with replacing teeth they’d be more likely to cover, at least in part, a dental bridge or a removable partial denture. It doesn’t matter to them that dental implants are a far better procedure and have a much better quality of living attributed to them.
I wish I was clearer on what you meant by “didn’t take”. My suspicion is it means the implants didn’t completely integrate with your bone. That’s an unusual complication unless they were improperly placed or you have a medical condition which precludes that. Though, your dentist should have screened that ahead of time. It’s possible your body just needs more healing time and they’ll still integrate.
However, you’re right that the cost should be more affordable. The upfront price would have covered the dental crown that covers the implant. If the root form didn’t bond, then you haven’t had the crown placed yet. Why pay for that twice? It’s possible he’s including bone grafting costs if you need to build up bone structure. At the least, a second opinion is worth it to try to determine why these failed to begin with.
Also, if the problem was how the dentist placed it, you shouldn’t be charged anything. You may be better served just asking for a refund and going to a more experienced implant dentist.
