I am absolutely livid. We’re new to town and started with a new family dentist. We’d never had any problems before. We had a fantastic dentist in our last location. My children have always had perfect teeth. Never a cavity between any of them.
I take them in for their first appointment with this new dentist who was recommended to me by a new acquaintance. Apparently, they’re friends. I’d never had to choose a dentist before so this was new territory for me and thought I’d try her recommendation.
Two of my children came out at the normal time, but my youngest was taking forever. I asked the receptionist if I could see what is taking so long and she just snapped that parents aren’t allowed in the operatory. Well, that was it for me. I just marched past her desk and went back there. Before she could stop me, I found my son. They were pulling his tooth! I couldn’t believe it. I told them to stop immediately and put his gas on oxygen.
First, I’d never given permission for sedation. Second, I’d never approved a pulled tooth. I demanded his x-rays and threatened to call the police if they didn’t. Once he was awake, we took them and went to an emergency dentist with the x-rays to see if his tooth could be saved. It couldn’t.
Fortunately, it was a baby tooth. As I suspected, the x-ray proved there was nothing wrong with his tooth. The dentist who worked on him after I left that office helped me report the first dentist, but now I need to find a new dentist. I liked the emergency dentist but he said he doesn’t usually work with children. He just took us because it was an urgent situation. He apologized but thought my children would be better served with someone with more experience with them. Help me. How do I find a new dentist?
Holy Cannoli! I’ve heard many dental horror stories, but this one has me in shock. I’m glad you followed your instincts. I hope this dentist loses his license. It sounds like you are a great mom.
Finding a dentist isn’t nearly as hard as what you’ve already experienced. I know you want the best dentist for your children, especially.
Finding the Best Dentist for Your Family
The first thing to do is look at the specific needs your family has. Do you just need a general dentist who works with children and is honest and good at his job? Or maybe you have some cosmetic aspirations. In that case, you’ll want to find a dentist highly skilled with cosmetic procedures such as porcelain veneers.
In that case, I’d look at the mynewsmile.com website. They screen cosmetic dentists before recommending them. Anyone they list has to show they have technical proficiency as well as an artistic eye to create stunning smile makeovers.
No matter what dentist you’re looking at, always, always, always check their reviews. You want to be certain that other patients who’ve been to their practice have had good experiences. In your case, given what has recently happened, I think it’s important you are in the operatory with your youngest for a while.
This had to have been traumatic for him and he’ll need his mother’s reassuring presence to know no one is going to do anything like that to him again. I’m sure if you explain to the dentist what he’d just gone through, they would be more than happy to accommodate you until both of you are comfortable with him on his own again.
