I think I made a huge mistake and am not sure quite how to fix it. Several years ago, I decided it was time for me to get a smile makeover. The first dentist I went to was highly recommended but expected all payment up front. I didn’t have that, so left and went to another dentist. I had planned to get 4 porcelain veneers, but the second dentist said he would only do eight. I was frustrated with that because it would double my cost and I’d be content with four. His response was that he is known for excellent cosmetic work and he will only provide excellent smiles if his name is going to be attached to it. Again, I left. Both of these dentists were recommended on a website called My New Smile, which lists good cosmetic dentists. I ended up going to a dentist who wasn’t listed there but would do four porcelain veneers and let me pay it out. I was thrilled until I saw the results. The “teeth” are too short and he stained them yellowish to “look natural”. I didn’t want them stained, otherwise why would I have paid a bunch of money to get them remade. He kept saying I’d get used to them and they were better than my original teeth. Well, it’s been a few years and I’m still disappointed. Can this be fixed or am I stuck?
Cosmetic dentistry isn’t taught in dental school, nor is it a recognized specialty. This puts often puts patients in the position of taking a gamble on what type of results the dentist will give them. This is one of the reasons why websites, such as mynewmile.com, are so important. They give patients a “one-up” and help them to make an informed decision about their dental and cosmetic work.
With some procedures, price shopping is okay. One example of that would be teeth whitening. It would be pretty tough for a dentist to mess up a teeth whitening procedure, so it is perfectly okay for you to call around and find a cheaper price. There’s very little skill involved.
Getting the Smile You Want with the Best Cosmetic Dentist
Once porcelain veneers are bonded on, they can’t be “fixed”, but they can be re-done. I would get a consultation with either one of the two dentists you visited before or see if there are any others in your area listed on the mynewsmile site. Find out the price and save up to get it done right.
Most of them should have some form of a beautiful smile guarantee so there is no way you will leave any other way but thrilled when your case is completed.
