I had Lumineers done several years ago. I wanted them whiter than they were made, but at the time, the dentist was told that color isn’t available. So we had to go with the next whitest shade. I’ve never been thrilled with them and brought it up again the other day. My dentist mentioned we could do Lumineers over Lumineers and he’d call to make sure the color I want his available first. The only thing that worries me is my teeth were a little bulky since getting the first Lumineers. Will putting another set on them make them even bulkier?
First, I’m going to suggest you stop going to this dentist for cosmetic work. He may be a fine family dentist, but he has no clue what he’s doing when it comes to creating a beautiful smile. One, Lumineers can be made as white as you want. You’ve always been able to make any brand of porcelain veneers extremely white. The fact that he didn’t know that worries me.
Second, years ago there was a push by the Lumineers company to get people interested in the idea of Lumineers being placed over old crowns to improve appearance. That’s very similar to what your dentist is suggesting now. An example of one of those old ads is above. However, they stopped running these a while ago because they received so many complaints about them.
A huge problem is the bonding. Porcelain doesn’t bond to porcelain nearly as well as it does to natural tooth structure.
What Should You Do About Your Porcelain Veneers?
Even if it were a good idea to place Lumineers on top of your Lumineers (which it’s not), it takes just as much work to if you started over and had the Lumineers removed and had all new porcelain veneers made. That’s actually what I’m going to recommend you do.
However, I am going to recommend you stay away from the Lumineers brand. That’s probably where the bulkiness came in with your current smile.
I want you to find an expert cosmetic dentist to re-do your smile makeover. Start by looking at the mynewsmile.com website. They recommend the best of the best cosmetic dentists by area. You simply input your zip code along with how far you’re willing to travel. When you do that, they’ll list out a group of dentists who are capable of giving you a stunning smile. In fact, most of them will have a beautiful smile guarantee.
