I had two crowns done on my very front teeth due to an accident. They’re okay, but I haven’t been happy with my smile for years. I thought I’d just do some updating by whitening them. My dentist suggested Zoom. It worked great for everything but the crowns. They look darker. He suggested we replace them to match the teeth. I thought that would be a good idea, but he can’t seem to get them to match. Should I go ahead because they’ll be “closer” to correct? Is there a way to get an exact match?
There is absolutely a way to get an exact match with these crowns, but not with your dentist. He has a grave misunderstanding about how cosmetic dentistry works, including the most basic of procedures—teeth whitening.
When you whiten your teeth, it will only work on natural tooth structure. Dental work, such as porcelain crowns, will not whiten. In actuality, it didn’t make your crowns darker either. The whiter, brighter appearance of your teeth did that by making them look darker. In reality, they stayed the same color.
Your dentist should have known this. It’s teeth whitening 101. If he didn’t know that, imagine what he doesn’t know about color theory in cosmetic work, which is much more advanced. He’s not going to match your crowns. What you need is an expert cosmetic dentist.
Who Can Match Your Crowns?
It’s hard for a patient to know who is a skilled cosmetic dentist because there isn’t a recognized specialty in the field. Training (and skill) varies greatly from dentist to dentist. My recommendation is to go to the mynewsmile.com website. They have a “find a cosmetic dentist” link where you input your zip code along with how far you’re willing to travel. They’ll put up a list of skilled, artistic cosmetic dentists.
They screen dentists who wish to be listed on their site, examining both their technical skill and training along with requiring evidence of cases they’ve done that show their artistry.
Expert Cosmetic Dentists and Smile Makeovers
Another thing they can do, aside from match your crowns perfectly, is to give you a complete smile makeover, using porcelain veneers. These can change anything about your smile, including the shape, size, color, and character. It’s an art form and you’ll have a smile so stunning you’ll smile constantly.
Your crowns will always have to be crowned, but using all-porcelain materials and their skill, those will be as gorgeous as the rest of your smile.
