I just had porcelain veneers placed and I’m tremendously disappointed. The glaze on them is so shiny they look fake. No teeth are that shiny. It makes it very obvious they aren’t natural teeth. They’re already bonded on so I don’t know if anything can be done about it. Is there a way to make porcelain veneers LESS shiny?
If they look super shiny, my guess is your dentist made the surface area flat. This would give it the effect you are experiencing. Take a peek at the image directly below. The first thing you should know is that all of the teeth are natural, except one. That one tooth has a dental crown. The second thing I’d like you to notice is the surface of the teeth.
While these teeth are naturally shiny, they don’t look weird. The difference is in the irregularity of the surface area. The front surfaces of our natural teeth aren’t flat. They have shape and texture to them. When cosmetic dentists vary the surface, it gives different visual impressions of the smile. The younger we are, the more texture you’ll find. There is some flattening out as we age.
The real problem you are facing is your dentist. I can tell you right away he isn’t an expert in cosmetic dentistry. How? Because he bonded on your porcelain veneers without you absolutely loving them. Based on what you said above, I’m not even certain he did a try-in before bonding them.
A true cosmetic dentist would use a try-in paste to allow you to see the porcelain veneers on you before permanently bonding them on. Unless you were absolutely thrilled with the results he would make changes on them until you were. Many cosmetic dentists call this a beautiful smile guarantee.
Taking the Shine-off Porcelain Veneers
You asked if you could reduce the shine. I’ll tell you how that is done, but I don’t think it’s the solution you are really looking for. The fastest way to remove this shine is with something like a prophy jet. Hygienists will use them during a cleaning. However, they should NEVER be used on porcelain veneers because they’ll remove the glazing.
The glazing is what gives the veneers their shine. It is also what protects them from picking up stains. So, not only will they look duller but they’ll quickly start staining. Unlike natural teeth, you can’t just use teeth whitening to brighten them back up again. Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth structure.
You have a couple of other options. If you trust your dentist to do a better job if he tries again. ask him to do them over. Tell him exactly what you don’t like. When you pay for a beautiful smile, you deserve to get one.
However, some dentists just don’t have the cosmetic skill necessary to do a smile makeover properly. It’s not something taught in dental school. That is a skill set they have to invest in learning post-doctoral studies.
You could ask your dentist for a refund and go to an expert cosmetic dentist to have the case re-done. To find one, look on the mynewsmile.com website. Every dentist they recommend has been carefully vetted for their cosmetic skill and artistry.
